It's the year of the Cicada... at least in these parts.

Well, it's apparently time for the 17 year Cicada here in our parts. The kids were out back playing freeze tag (frozen catchers is what we called it in my day) yesterday morning and I heard them shout out "look at all the Cicadas everywhere!" Needless to say I headed outside with my camera in hand. The last time I experienced this we were living in the Nashville, Tennessee area - this was prior to the HubbaBrood. I guess that was around 1997 or 1998. I remember Cicadas being everywhere even inside the office buildings in downtown Nashville. People would be knocking them off as they rode the elevator to their office. The house we were living in at the time had a lot of trees out back and the sound of the Cicadas was almost deafening. It's going to be a fun summer.

Check out this site called CicadaMania.com for some really neat Cicada footage and information. I'm thinkin' about gettin' a Cicada t-shirt.

Those are some of the creepiest, most evil-looking critters – but I like nothing better than sitting out on the patio on a hot summer evening, listening to the cicadas trill. I find it soothing; for Turtle, it's just a reminder that those creepy things are out there.

I think it only comes around in the Old Dominion every sixteen years and that happened four years ago. We have about twelve to wait for the next outbreak. My Oldest is so afraid of flying insects---he said that he will be well into college by then, away from home and gladly.

Foo - every time I hear them I think of HEAT. It's always so hot when they get heavy into the trill.

Rachel - HubbaDette is deathly fearful of flying insects as well. She is going to lose her mind this summer. I have the hardest time keeping her outside because of flying bugs.

Whenver Doozie and Dylan were here Dylan heard the cicadas in the trees and asked me if there were lots of rattle snakes that lived in trees here in Oklahoma.

I loved catching those when I was a kid.

Uncle J - we just got back from our morning bike ride. We decided to venture outside the neighborhood today. We came upon a giant old maple and it was covered, all over the ground and the lower trunk, with Cicadas. My kids had a screaming attack - they were all over the place.

Did you see Moses anywhere?

Was it cicadas or grasshoppers that were one of the plagues?

Uncle J - Wasn't it locusts? Exodus 10:4,12-14

Exodus 10:6 "They shall fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians..." NKJV

Yuck!

Yeah, I'm so dumb I thought locusts might actually be cicadas.
We had another word for cidadas when I was a kid but I can't remember right now wha it is.

those are just icky. Why don't you kill some, dry them out and make jewelry and trinkets out of them? you could start a roadside gift shop

Dooz - That's a pretty cool idea! I was just think yesterday that HubbaDood needs to think of something to create and sell.
